What to do when a child discloses abuse
Receiving a disclosure of abuse is a huge responsibility — and one that must be handled properly to ensure the child’s safety. First and foremost, it is important to remain calm, and to let the child know that you are listening and taking them seriously. Assure them that you believe their words, and that you want to help. As soon as possible, although not while the child is talking to you, take notes and record details, and then report what was disclosed to you to the proper authorities.
