What Difference Does The Holy Spirit Make?

7th Sunday of Easter

“I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.”Ps. 27

There are people who hear the same Word of God, receive the same teachings, live the same celebrations, and yet their lives take completely different paths. Some remain unchanged, trapped in fear, sadness, pride, or lukewarmness; others, however, are deeply transformed, love with a new strength, persevere in the midst of suffering, and radiate a peace that does not seem human. Very often, the difference lies in openness to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit does not force His way into the heart. God respects human freedom. He can touch, call, inspire, and move a person interiorly… but one can resist, close oneself off, and silence that gentle voice through unbelief, sin, self-sufficiency, or attachment to the world. That is why Jesus so often insisted on faith: faith opens the door and allows God to act.

When a person truly opens himself to the Holy Spirit through faith, he no longer lives only by his own human strength. He begins to think with greater light, to discern more clearly, and to have strength where before there was weakness. What once seemed impossible begins to become possible: forgiving. getting up after falling, resisting temptation, loving one’s enemies, remaining faithful in trials, and holding on to hope in the midst of darkness.

The difference is enormous because the Holy Spirit is not simply an external help; He is God Himself dwelling in the soul. And wherever He enters, a new creation begins. The hardened heart begins to soften. Selfishness begins to break apart. Prayer ceases to be routine and becomes an encounter. Scripture begins to come alive. The cross is no longer seen only as suffering, but is understood as a path of glory and purification. But this requires giving Him His rightful place at the wheel of your life. If you separate yourself from Him, if you do not allow Him to take His place as the head, He cannot help you.

Many people live exhausted because they try to carry the weight of the spiritual life alone. They still want to remain in control; they try to live religion merely on a human level, but in this way they do not open themselves to divine Grace. They continue living according to the flesh, with the self still at the center. They want to conquer sin through human discipline alone, to find peace only through reasoning, to change without truly surrendering themselves to God. But Christianity is not merely human effort; it is divine life within man. That is why Saint Paul said:

“The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”2 Corinthians 3:6

“It is Christ who lives in me.”Ga 2,19-20

Without the Holy Spirit, even religious things can remain empty, cold, and external. But when the Spirit ads, everything changes.
