The More We Give, The More We Receive

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

“This poor widow put in more than all others.” Mark 12:43

How would you call me if for every one dollar you give me, I would give you a hundred dollars back? Besides calling me “silly”, you would call me “generous” right? That’s what God is with us. Yes, God is love, God is mercy; but he loves to be generous with His children. “You anoint my head with oil; my cup is overflowing. Goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life.” (Ps. 23:5) I just love those words: “my cup overflows.” God is always giving, always generous; however, he also invites us to imitate his generosity. The women from this Sunday’s readings give us a lesson of how God will always be there for us. They are apparently poor and needy, but they also possess a great wealth: a total trust in God knowing that He will provide. This reminded me of the gospel we heard a couple of Sundays ago of the young rich who could not give up his riches and was sad because he was so rich. The widows from the readings represent the true attitude that we, as Christians, must have. An attitude of generosity knowing that the more we give, the more we will receive. The widows give all what they have their possessions and their lives. They empty themselves from all material attachments so that God can fill their hearts with true joy and peace. That, my friends, is true generosity and confidence and total abandonment to the providence of God, the giver of all that is good. May God bless you!
